SHCMT Code of Ethics

In order to promote the highest ideals among Siberian Husky owners and breeders and to contribute to the continuous improvement of the breed within the framework of the American Kennel Club-approved breed standard, I pledge that:

  1. I will maintain my dogs in safe, sanitary facilities; provide annual inoculations; and provide adequate care, veterinary care, exercise and social interaction to safeguard their physical and mental fitness.
  2. I will follow the rules of good sportsmanship in all Siberian Husky competitions and activities.
  3. I will attempt to help and provide educational information to novice exhibitors, racers, breeders and enthusiasts, without deriding others.
  4. I will fully explain to all prospective Siberian Husky purchasers the disadvantages as well as the advantages of owning a Siberian Husky.
  5. I will keep well informed in the field of genetics and will work persistently to eliminate hereditary defects from the breed.
  6. All Siberian Huskies that I breed will: be of sound health and temperament; be no less than one year of age; be certified as clear of evidence of inherited eye anomalies by an ACVO certified veterinarian within one year prior to the date of breeding; be free from hip dysplasia as certified by OFA examination or by preliminary examination if less than two years old; if female, whelp no more than one litter per year, or, if bred in consecutive heat cycles, will rest one heat cycle before being bred again.
  7. I will, before entering any breeding agreement, carefully analyze the conformation and the pedigree of the prospective sire and dam and, keeping the breed standard clearly in mind, refuse the mating if in my opinion it will not be in the best interest of the breed. If I deny service, I will fully explain my reasons to the owner of the female.
  8. I will refuse to deal with dog wholesalers or to sell puppies or dogs to pet shops, by auction or by raffle, and will include in all stud contracts an agreement to be signed by the owner of the female that no puppies resulting from the mating will be wholesaled, sold to pet shops, by auction or by raffle.
  9. I will practice ethical advertising when selling puppies and dogs. I will use truthful descriptions, and will make no exaggerated claims as to quality, working ability, or rarity. Where possible, the OFA and SHOR or CERF numbers of dogs or parents of puppies will be listed.
  10. I will not breed Siberian Husky hybrids.
